May I congratulate you, Sir, upon your recent appointment?   I have long since been an admirer.

 

By way of introduction;    I presented oral evidence to the HOC Select Committee of which you were Chairman in December 1996.    You will recall it recommended a free vote upon the subject of frozen pensions be put to the House of Commons?   It ignored the recommendation.

 

Your new appointment seems to provide an excellent opportunity for you to exercise your conscience and to encourage others to support you in removing this blatant example of unfair discrimination.

 

At that time I was Secretary-General of WABEP.     I am now 90 and, given bureaucratic procedures,   I cannot hope to benefit financially from unfreezing.   However, this is a matter of conscience;    Britain’s corporate conscience.       The sense of “fair play” claimed by all Parties is sadly lacking in this instance.

 

 The only benefit to which I could look forward is that I would die unashamed of being British.
