An interesting article.  Why is his name familiar to me?

Until a couple of days ago, over 34 years of research I hadn't found an ancestor who wasn't Scots or Irish.  By pure chance I stumbled on an inquiry on a website that has led me to Thomas Gowling and Anne/Hannah Sanderson, Kirkby Thore, Wesmorland, married in 1710 - my 6xgreat grandparents.  When their son moved to Scotland, Gowling became Golding. So I am at least 128th part English.
