Two items from today's Herald to cheer you up.

During the fatal accident inquiry into the deaths of 4 anglers on Loch Awe, the Deputy Leader of a Fire Station said that he had completed his basic training in water rescue (it's all in compartments now), but that only entailed throwing out a rope. The rules forbade him actually to enter the water. These firemen had heard the cries for help of the anglers. Other excuses for doing nothing were heard from other experts in other fields.

We are told the average household in Scotland throws out £430-worth of food every year, so bins for waste food are to be introduced, at the discretion of local councils. We already have a black (general), a blue (recycling) and a brown (garden stuff) bin. We don't throw out food unless its bread to the birdies, hence we don't put it in a bin - we eat the effing stuff. However, an empty food waste bin will be viewed with suspicion by council jobsworths, indeed, it could well result in a "fine" of £200 under anti-terror legislation (I'm not making this up), the inference (obvious only to these cretins) being that the waste food must be in the wrong bin. I look forward to it.

Hugh.
