John,

The Antonine Wall itself stopped at Old Kilpatrick on the north bank of the
Clyde. A chain was slung across the river from there (quite shallow and
probably a good bit wider at that time) and a fort was built on the south
bank at Whitemoss overlooking the river. A chain of fortlets with a road
ran south westward from there to Outerwards, above Skelmorlie. These were
signalling forts . One not far from here can be seen on Google Earth at
55deg 55' 34" N, 4 deg 43' 49" W.

Of the Skermorlie fortlet is written :

"... a small rectangular earthwork measuring c. 28 m. [about 92 feet] over
the spread ramparts has been identified as a patrol-post, placed on the
watershed between the Noddsdale and Skelmorlie Waters. Excavation revealed a
turf rampart 3.8 m. wide, a timber gateway 2.3 m. wide on the south side,
and two internal buildings made of timber, associated with Antonine pottery.
After a violent destruction the fortlet was rebuilt on similar lines, still
in the Antonine period."

Hugh.
