[BITList] rebuffed

Colin,

The al Megrahi affair shows no sign of fading away. The response of the Scottish Government to the "invitation" to testify before the US Senate committee was that they are not answerable to them - I liked that. Jack Straw, erstwhile Labour Cabinet Minister, was also invited, and he swithered a bit before deciding there was nothing he could tell them that they didn't already know, so he ain't going over. I prefer the other reponse, there's more balls in it. I now await with bated breath the comments of sundry Scottish Tory and Labour people who criticised the SNP decision not to go.

On Thursday the (Glasgow) Herald printed an article in the Washington Post selling the pernicious line that al Megrahi is "alive and well" in Tripoli, apparently having conned the stupid Scots. And the New York Post said, "Now even the Brits admit it - handing a get-out-of-jail-free card to a terrorist .... was a mistake. It's about time. But why stop there? London should now do everything in its power to get Adelbaset ali Mohmed Megrahi back from Lybia and behind bars, where he belongs." Both articles are fantasy. Megrahi is at death's door, and the matter has eff all to do with "the Brits" (an offensive name if ever there was one). London, to use the NY Post's myopic designation, has as much to do with it as has Mickey sodding Mouse, and that is the only thing "the Brits" are now admitting.

David Cameron is now under fire for a major gaffe in Washington. The UK, he conceded, have been the junior partner in the UK/US relationship since WW2. His head on a plate is now being sought by ex-soldiers and others with memories of the first 2 years of WW2.

Hugh.
