There's a lot of confusion in print about this matter.  Tate & Lyle didn't exist until 1921.  Tate, and Lyle, had separate refineries in London until then, and Lyle had at least one in Greenock.  It is specious to claim a partnership that didn't exist until 1921 traces its roots to 1859.  It started neither in 1859 with Henry Tate in wherever, nor with Abram Lyle in Greenock in 1865.
