though yanks have the strange attitude that some one might want to push them around, personally I would like to beat them over the head and knock some sense into  them...................................!
and my gun/s protect me from the perceived threat. this often masquerades under the banner of hunting. a big part of the white family tradition in the "less sophisticated" states is a dad taking his young lad out into the wilds - to show him how to hunt with a rifle - and by implication, be a man!  on the other hand, the powerful National Rifle Association pushes this [suppose ably] inalienable right to the max. and who would dare to tinker with the father/son relationship?

some courts here allow the actual court proceedings to be televised. There is one such program on from 0900 to 1400 week days and I find the proceedings quite educational. [another program - Forensic Files, is even more educational.]
the current trial is Florida v Schack; the defendant - Mr. Schack, was cleaning or adjusting the scope [he had two scenarios] on his Israeli army assault rifle [see picture - but Mr. Schack's  was fitted with a tripod a la 3 man machine gun crew] at 0230 in his bed room, when he says it fell off the dresser and accidentally discharged, killing his girl friend - the bullet entering her neck. Needless to say the jury didn't agree that it was an accident - life in prison for mr schack.

Now, why would any sane person want to own an army assault rifle - they are made and designed for one purpose only - to kill the enemy's army! the muzzle velocity of this galil is about 3000 ft/sec [over 2000 mph - by the time you hear the shot, you've been dead >2 seconds!], and generally speaking, Israeli designed and manufactured weapons kill with unusual efficiency.
why he was messing with the assault rifle in the bedroom at 0230 is unclear - insomnia, an attack of obsessive compulsive disorder? - he only said he was readying it to go shooting next morning.

if gun owners realised the devastation to human life and limb a gun accident can cause, they wouldn't want to play with them - and that, for most male gun owners is what a gun is - a big boy's toy [which I have a RIGHT to bear]. 

the more dangerous the toy, the more  machismo is exhibited and masculinity enhanced - rather like steve irwin. 

that, hugh is the american male's fascination with fire arms.

This gun fetish, is it all down to anal retention, or what?  I read somewhere that there are 87,000,000 legal guns in private hands in the USA.  Assume 6 bullets in each, and that's the ability to kill 522,000,000 people, assuming they don't kill each other.  If they did that, it might enter the realm of differential equations, or maybe not. It would certainly solve the gun problem.
