Hugh,

That reminds me of the story that my Dad told me when working in Fenners in Hull. The workers were having a break and talking about the recent pay increases, one of the men there was a little simple. His job was loo cleaner, he asked the others what his increase would be, the reply was time and a turd !

John,

Welcome home. This is an example of the old "woman as victim" propaganda spread around by the Lesbian People's Front. It completely ignores the wife's experience at her husband's workplace, welding in a double bottom that someone had shat in, for instance. We are led to assume his job is of no consequence. I speak as someone who has seen many of these e-mails. It was always a matter for regret that I never could hoover the floors or take the kiddies to school when I was at work. Equally, Janet was often distraught that she wasn't there to hold my hand when some dickhead moved a pump just after I'd piped it up.

Re the above, I had a conversation recently with a chap who has a fund of stories about shipyard characters - I intend to encourage him to write them down. One I like concerns a worthy who was paid on a part time basis for removing turds from double bottoms on newbuildings, the going rate being a shilling a turd. When the manager after a while said he was at it, therefore he required proof, he lined up the turds on the steps to the manager's office and called him out to witness them. End of dispute.

Hugh.
