He's a typical politician doing what politicians do : telling groups of potential supporters what they'd like to hear. I daresay his speech changes to suit the audience.  I didn't notice much reaction to his jokes, and he made at least one.  I stopped voting Labour not long after New Labour started, so the advice in red print is lost on me.
