The way I heard it was thiswise.  A man was taken aside by his wife and instructed to tell their son about the birds and the bees, since she reckoned he was of an age to know about them.  The man protested, but gave in, and at the first opportunity he sat down beside the lad  in some embarrassment. "Son," he said, "The time has come to tell you about the birds and the bees.  I'll give it to you straight - no point beating about the bush."  "Ok, Dad," said the lad, "I understand."   "Well," said Dad, "You will recall the time last year when I took you on a trip to the big city.  We went out for a meal and, since the night was young, I took you to a night club.  A couple of young ladies joined our company, and one thing led to another.  You will recall what happened when we took them back to our hotel.  Well, son, it's pretty much the same with the birds and the bees."
