but do you prefer to be known as a tradesman or an engineer – and BOTH is not the correct answer. your only choice is one or t ’other in this instance.

conversely, how many mates prefer to be called deck officer as opposed to mate –  or ship driver or cargo wallah or oil hauler, etc.?

Tradesman is OK with me, if a trifle quaint - much better then tradesperson.  As for disparaging names for time-served skilled workers, "the metal bashing trades" is the worst I've heard.  This came from the mouth of Geoffrey Hoon - he is a politician, I am led to believe, and Labour, unless I'm mistaken. Who was it said that "a politician is an arse upon which everything has sat, except a man"?
