      Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

DUBLIN (Dow Jones)--Ireland's public is braced for a sweeping EUR6 billion in spending cuts and tax increases to be announced in Finance Minister Brian Lenihan's 2011 budget at 1545 GMT Tuesday.

The government must successfully pass the budget in order to qualify for the EUR67.5 billion financial aid package from the European Union and International Monetary Fund agreed late last month.

Lawmakers will only vote Tuesday on financial resolutions concerning relatively uncontroversial matters such as excise duty on diesel and petrol.

However, whether these resolutions are passed will give an indication of the likelihood of the government passing the contentious aspect of the budget: the social welfare bill, to be presented before Christmas, and the finance bill, which has to be presented within four months of the budget, but is likely to be brought forward.

Is this an option in the USA?
Spending cuts and Tax rises - Who dare ask this of us?
      Who would agree?
After all, we are over spent by only :-
