The New York Times printed one of Jimmy Reid's speeches verbatim, comparing it to the Gettysburg address.  I didn't ever meet him - he was no longer around Govan when I worked there - but during the 80s I was in the company of some of his erstwhile left wing colleagues having a pre-meeting drink somewhere.  These were erstwhile colleagues, not erstwhile left wing - the type Jimmy had no time for.  He never strayed from his socialist roots, but, when he started to earn a crust writing for newspapers not on the "approved list", he was subject to criticism.  Not that he gave a shit.  A lady in the group above mentioned - she probably eschewed bra and knickers as badges of capitalism - spat venom when Jimmy's name was mentioned.  "Betrayal", and "the working class" were mentioned more than once. As she looks around the UK today, I wonder who she thinks betrayed the working class.
