Police Know Who Found the Prototype iPhone
Police have identified the individual who obtained the prototype iPhone, according to reports. But that may or may not be the person who sold it to the Gizmodo gadget blog.
The San Jose Business Journal reported Tuesday that the investigators "identified and interviewed the person who took the phone from the Gourmet Haus Staudt on March 18."

0diggsdigg The SJBJ reported that an outside counsel for Apple, as well as the engineer who misplaced the phone, reported the incident as a theft. But according to San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, the incident has not been treated as a crime. As of Tuesday, the investigation had been put on hold to determine whether Gawker Media, which owns Gizmodo, has the right to invoke California's shield law protecting journalists, the paper reported.

Powell originally left the prototype iPhone in the Redwood City, Calif. cafe on his birthday, before some unknown person or persons obtained the phone and eventually sold it for $5,000 to Gizmodo.

Police seized four computers and two servers, plus several external hard drives, from Gizmodo editor Jason Chen last Friday night.
