ah, the strange case of the toxic sofa!

it brings to mind the ongoing class action law suit here.
the action is alleging that a number of makers of petrol propelled lawn
mowers mis-stated the horse power of the engine, ooow, very naughty!
If you purchased a gasoline-powered lawn mower with an engine up to 30
horsepower for your own use between January 1, 1994 and April 12, 2010-yes,
the class period is sixteen years-then you may be eligible to submit a claim
for up to $35 for a walk-behind mower or $75 for a riding mower.

the lawn mower suit is almost as ridiculous as the one claiming the sizes of
certain computer screens [crt] were mis-stated by manufacturers. for example
a 15" screen might actually be only 14.879".....................

the toxic sofa claim seems to have merit as people could show they suffered;
how so with the pc screen and the lawn mower?

there was another class action suit [not frivolous this time] against the
drug phen-phen. the drug was found to have serious side effects, including
death and was taken off the market.
three attorneys [2 partners + 1] sued for about 400 of their clients, the
manufacturer paid out about $200 million. the 3 attorneys waltzed off with
not the usual 1/3 of the settlement, but 3/4 - in fees and expenses.
needless to say, when the clients found out they were not happy and
eventually got the police, D.A. etc. involved in this fraud. the outcome was
that the 2 attorneys were disbarred, they were sentenced to long prison
terms and fined millions of dollars. the other attorney claimed he was an
alcoholic and was too drunk to know what was going on most of the time - AND
GOT OFF..............................................

go figure that one.
