[BITList] Hope our council doesn't read this

Robbo,

Forced to have 9 different bins? There is no legal obligation to recycle - inasmuch as it may be an obligation at all, it's a moral obligation. Also, the sorting out of rubbish is a job for scavengers, or for council employees (presently employed for that purpose). Incidentally, the men who emptied the dusbins (the midden men) were at one time called "scaffies". Our local council dallied for a while with the notion of having a separate bin for food waste, with penalties for not putting food waste in the food waste bin. Well, we don't put out food waste, we eat it all, or the seagulls or other birds eat it - or the hedgehogs - though none of them will get fat on the few scraps we sometimes leave. Being morons, they equated lack of waste in one bin with its presence in another. I was looking forward to taking them on, when the scheme was suddenly abandoned. We have the black wheelie bin (No Hot Ashes) that was imposed on us years ago when they decided we'd all have to wheel a bin out to the road edge to save them paying men to take out the old ones. At the time I set out the terms and conditions under which I'd participate in their new scheme, including sueing them if we injured ourselves on their wheeled property. They put up a petulant argument which didn't convince me. Later, when recycling became a sensible thing to do, they loaned us a brown bin (No Stones) for garden waste, and a blue bin (No a long bloody list of things) for recycleable waste. These can be seen everywhere, sitting at the road edge 3 days after being emptied. I don't object to recycling - I know the garden stuff is processed, and it gets it out of our way - but I will not be an unpaid cog in a council machine. Regardless, the bottom line up here is that the council have no right whatever to dictate what we have in our homes or in our gardens. Nor have the water company, which is why we haven't got water meters.

Hugh.
