Hugh,

Was the Union Flag at half-mast ?  Locally,  the Fire Stations are flying the flag at half-mast due to the death of Firemen recently in the UK whilst on operations.

All your correspondent has to do is run the flag up the flagpole, assuming he has done the requisite Elfin Safety risk assessment first.  Or, in the case of the small, decrepit Saltire in our back garden, tie it insecurely to the stump of a recently deceased desert plant of unknown name.  It's not a political act, just a flag.  We also had a Danish flag, the Dannebrog, till our daughter stole it.  Our local Fire Brigade were flying a large, brand new Union Flag yesterday.  Its shiny newness caught the eye - why they were flying it on the usually empty flagpole was their business.
