Dave,

I rate Brunel as high as I do for the sheer breadth of his work. When he designed a ship or a bridge, he designed a ship or a bridge, ie, virtually all of it. The world was full of men like him who performed feats few, if any, could contemplate nowadays. Barnes Wallis was a brilliant scientist, but he lived in a different age, one where specialisation had become the way forward. John, later Sir John, Brown got fed up telling people he didn't design the Queens - individuals no longer designed ships. He led a team in John Brown's Shipyard (no relation) that designed the hull as a steelwork structure of a particular hydrodynamic shape, with input from teams practising other disciplines, passing this on to others for the creation of the total design.
