Binika Hankton has been booked with first-degree murder.
New Orleans police arrested a 36-year-old woman Friday in connection with the stabbing death of a 76-year-old Central City man whose body was found inside his apartment bedroom Thursday, saying the two were "romantically involved" and the motive was robbery.

Binika Hankton, of 2038 Elizardi St., was booked with first-degree murder in the death of Henry Barber.

Barber -- whose body was found Thursday about noon at 2018 St. Andrew St. -- routinely would get Hankton out of jail after her many crack cocaine-related arrests, said New Orleans Police Department Deputy Superintendent Marlon Defillo.

The two had a long relationship, he said.

Police believe Barber was stabbed after the two "had an altercation, " probably on Tuesday, Defillo said.

Investigators from the coroner's office estimated Barber had been killed 24 to 48 hours before his body was found.

Police believe robbery was the motive because Barber recently received a large settlement and hid the money in his apartment, Defillo said. The money is missing, he said.

Hankton notified police on Thursday that she was worried because she had not seen Barber in several days, said Defillo, who dismissed the alert as a ploy to establish an alibi.

Detective Antonio Sosa identified Hankton as the assailant, police said.

Police didn't have to search far for Hankton on Friday.

"She already was in central lock-up, booked on a probation violation, " Defillo said.

Barber -- who court records show spent time in prison after cocaine and crack cocaine convictions in the 1990s -- rented the apartment through the Central City Housing Development Corp., which provides housing services, an agency spokesman said. After spending many years living at various Central City addresses, he moved into apartment B of his St. Andrew Street building in 2003, according to public records. A neighbor said she believied he lived alone.
