there have been a number of cases like that, hugh

innocents knocking on some ones door - and being shot dead. even family members and relatives have been shot in similar circumstances.

it's halloween time, which reminds me of the japanese exchange student who went trick or treating in a ghoulish costume in baton rouge with his sponsor's son.
upon knocking on a neighbours door, he was shot and killed.
no criminal charge against the homeowner was made, he said he thought it was a house invasion - end of story.
the lad's family won a wrongful death suite against the homeowner.

keep telling you - it's a place of extremes.

Colin,

There was a case some years back. A young Scots chap, only a few hours in the US, accepted a lift back to his hotel from a bar, but asked to be let out of the car after becoming alarmed at something. He became disoriented and lost, knocked on a door for directions, and the arsehole inside not only shot him dead (murdered him, in UK parlance) through the door, but got away with it in court. However, the chap's family weren't poor, and they took the thug to court. The only course that presented itself was to sue for compensation. They won $250,000 - plus costs, I'd say. An odd outcome.

Hugh.
