the place is full of crap, hugh 

and it sure is legal - 2nd amendment to the constitution - "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"

the bearers of arms feel that their right is to shoot their way (like bang, bang) out of government impositions which are against their interpretation of the constitution.

it is incidental that they may shoot a person they do not want on their property. this may sound a bit extreme, but bear in mind there are plenty of crazies here bent on ill intent - a bullet in the head is the only way of stopping them.

hopefully the situation in uk is not so dire or extreme.

see google on this subject and apparently it/was english common law.
