Here is an interesting debate in the House of Lords questioning the propriety of the pension of 5,000 pounds sanctioned to Lord Dalhousie by the EIC, at the time when Indian matters had been taken out of the Company's hands.  Even in the House of Lords there were some peers who questioned the legitimacy of the British presence in India.
