We don't got none spurtle - a wooden spoon suffices. Nigel Slater's comments should have stopped at the word "anyone".  I hated porridge as a child but, it being wartime, I had to eat it, and cheese, etc, though not all at once. In later life I realised it wasn't the porridge I disliked, but the sugar Mum put on it.  Now we eat it with salt - much improves the taste.
