Wasn't the funniest joke ever the one invented during WW1 for use against the foe?  Or so Monty Python (?) would have us believe.  This was so lethally funny that it had to be assembled word by word in places all over the UK by people with no sense of humour then shouted through megaphones from the front line by specially trained volunteers wearing earplugs.  In English it was harmless, not so in German - so it's safe to say it was along the lines of, "My dog has no nose."  "How does he smell?"  "Terrible."  Accounts vary, but it's reckoned it shortened the war by at least a year.
