The irony is, Patrick wasn't even Irish, and he never wore a brown bowler hat or drank Guinness, having been born just across the Clyde in Old Kilpatrick, in or near the Roman fort there, son of a soldier in the Roman Legion a woman of the Britons.  Or he may have been born in the companion fort at Whitelees on the south side, sharing the oversight of the ford.  So the story goes, and it's at last as credible as all the others.
