Hiya Khati Lovers ,

You might know that Nizam Restaurant ( NR ) was started 76 years ago  
by a Chaprassi/Peon by the name of Sheikh Reza ( not to be confused by  
the term Razza ) , who was discontented working for his employer . He  
began with a small food stall and gradually expanded his business .  
The story goes that Reza invented the Khati Roll to cater for the  
finicky British , who did not want to get their fingers greasy .

You might have heard the sad news a while ago that NR  had closed down  
on 11 August 2003 due to a worker's strike and a prolonged battle over  
sales tax with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation . However , the good  
news , that most of you already know, is that the restaurant was  
bought by Bengal Shelter , refurbished , given a face lift , and  
reopened on 6 September 2006 after a closure of about 29 months .

NR has now been converted into what the new owners say is a fine  
dinning restaurant . There are two separate sections , namely the  
vegetarian and non vegetarian sections . One part of the area is air- 
conditioned perhaps to keep up with the facilities provided by their  
nearby rivals , KFC and Macs.

You will be glad to hear that the food supplied is still as delicious  
as ever  . The Khati , Kheeri rolls , Mutton Curry , Biryani are mouth  
watering as ever . You will also not be disappointed by the Firini ,  
Lassi , and Lime Juice . I understand that a good meal , including  
drinks , costs about RS 60 , which is less than A$2 .

However , if I had to visit NR , I would surely miss the waiters  
shouting out their orders to the cooks . After all , who can ever  
forget such cries of , " Char Khati , ake Lassi , do Lime juice , teen  
Firini , ake Mutton Curry etc ". Gosh ! This talk makes me feel mighty  
hungry . So I will go away now and take a Khati from the fridge .
