You are correct, it says 48k on the back of the Spectrum (my son's, 
actually).  Such power was unheard of when I bought my 8k Acorn Atom  and 
had it boosted to 16k.  This necessitated a large finned heat sink with a 
glass of cold water on top.  The old B&W TV we used to play the things on is 
still in the loft - time I had it down.  Also somewhere up there is the 
cassette player and cassettes.  And I've got a map of Valhalla I made at the 
time.
