German tourists storm out of Scots pub over Churchill portrait
Jul 10 2009
A GROUP of German tourists walked out of a Scottish bar - when they
spotted a huge painting of Winston Churchill on the wall.
The black and white portrait of Britain's wartime leader has been a
talking point with locals since Bar 99 opened in Aberdeen two years ago.
But the Germans were less than impressed when they clocked the artwork
- and left in disgust.
Assistant manager Andy Stewart, 30, said: "It was on Monday, there was
a group of four German tourists who came in to have lunch.
"One of the older guys in the group pointed up at the painting and
started speaking to another man who was with them.
"They had a little discussion among themselves and walked out before
we could get them seated at a table. We were all quite amused that
they took a dislike to our painting.
"Luckily, no Fawlty Towersesque comments occurred!"
In the hit BBC sitcom, hotel owner Basil Fawlty drove a group of
German tourists to despair with his repeated cries of: "Don't mention
the war."
Andy added: "We've heard a couple of debates before with people
mistaking Churchill for Alfred Hitchcock, but no one has ever been
offended by it."
Co-owner Barrie Brown, who runs bars in Aberdeen, Dundee and
Edinburgh, said several of his venues were adorned with portraits of
famous Brits.
He said: "Winston Churchill is a very important figure in British
history.
"The war wasn't that long ago and we think he should have his pride of
place. He loved his booze."
