Celebrating a legacy of good food, liquor and music, Trincas on Park
Street announced its 50th anniversary celebrations on June 25. Owners
Deepak and Shashi Puri were present with guests Usha Uthup and Nondon
Bagchi.
Usha arrived in all her glamour, wearing a pretty sari and silver
jewellery. After engaging herself in mild social necessities and
asking for a cup of coffee, she settled into her chair and was all set
to begin the meet.
After a brief introduction by Deepak Puri, Usha was quick to begin her
nostalgic speech. Having kick-started her career at Trincas, she was
bound to get a little emotional while she spoke, but she spoke
straight from the heart. She thanked Trincas for giving her a chance
and called it her home. “It’s like a place of pilgrimage for me,” she
said.
She recalled her first performance at Trincas when she had come down
to Kolkata and had asked Trincas whether she could perform in a sari.
“The management was extremely kind and asked me to perform just the
way I was. The power my lungs have today is because of Trincas. There
used to be smokers sitting in the front row and I used to inhale a lot
of smoke. After my performance was over, I would be escorted away from
the
Usha Uthup, Deepak Puri and Nondon Bagchi
guests and would not mingle or socialise, since that was not permitted
legally in those days for performers,” she said.
Usha also sang a few lines of the first song she sang at Trincas and
recalled how her salary during the first month was just Rs 1500.
Walking in 40 minutes into the event, Nodon Bagchi smiled and talked a
little about how he started his career as a drummer in Trincas at the
age of 15. Usha was also very glad to talk about some special dishes
served at Trincas. Shashi Puri spoke about how Trincas today has new
food, new music and even Bengali bands performing.
Apparently, the event was organised to discuss Trincas’ plans for
celebrating their golden jubilee, but that was the only thing that was
not talked about during the entire event.
