Robbo,

I used to see some of these buses - different company and livery - on our roads when a wee bit younger. I heard some adult saying they were streamlined, but nobody could explain to me what that meant, so I worked out that it was the long curved stripe on the side. Years later, I realised I had invented the "go faster stripe".

I last travelled on such a bus in the 70s. We took the ferry over to Dunoon to get the bus to Tighnabruaich for a two week holiday in a cousin's cottage, and after watching the parade of pipers (it was the day of the Cowal Games in Dunoon) we got the bus when it came along. Getting off at Tighnabruaich, I asked the driver about return times, etc, and it was then I realised we had got the last ever bus on that route. The alternative was the Post Bus which took six, we were told. At the end of a fine two weeks we made our way to the assigned spot and found four already there. With our five, that made nine, however, the driver was not in the least put out. Bums found places to sit, and we were warned to keep some heads down if the polis were sighted.

Hugh.
