Chelsey would have the blues as a sea captain
Monday 26 January 2009

 From Michael Grey,

SIR, John Lang in his First Person article (Lloyd’s List, January 20)
was very telling in his comparison between the world of aviation and
shipping in their attitude to casualties, where the priority in the
former is that of discovering the cause, and in the latter fixing
blame and criminal charges.

If a maritime regime had been applied to the Airbus ditching, the
heroic Chesley Suttenberger would have been breathalysed, charged
under the Migratory Species Act 1998 for the negligent slaughter of an
unknown number of geese, and he and his employers would have faced
numerous criminal charges for their pollution of the Hudson River with
their fuel-laden aircraft.

If he had been a foreign national, he would have been deemed a “flight
risk” and all his travel documents would have been seized, while he
would have been incarcerated in a fetid prison before he had even
managed to dry out his uniform. Makes you proud to be a seafarer,
enjoying such worldwide public respect and esteem, doesn’t it?
