John
This is yet another of your marvelous submissions to our site.
Made me feel quite nostalgic (and old). Please keep them coming.
Going back to 1955, I was one of a "squad" of apprentices instructed to
clear two
hangers (at Scottish Aviation, Prestwick). Joe Dyer - Supervisor - a
thorough gentleman.
This involved dismantling a multitude of aircraft and/or salvaging spare
parts.
Looking back it was really a form of vandalism because of the rarity of the
many types
involved which would have been "gold-dust" for preservation nowadays.
Hawker Harts, Walruses, Avro Yorks, Argus (?), various kites damaged in
prangs
etc. I can't remember them all - senior moments (?) but one of them was owned
by Group Captain MacIntyre who was the first to fly over Mount Everest along
with the
Duke of Hamilton
The carcases were duly towed out and used for fire-fighting exercises.
What a waste.! ! !
The hangers, Nos 15 & 16, were required for a Sea Avenger contract which I
was not involved
as I proceeded to the Tool Room.
Nostalgia would be a great thing if you didn't need a good memory.

Salaams the noo....................Rab C
