john concerning the acrophobia emails and hugh's photo of that bloody great (but very high) diesel engine - you know you might be right about the 2 stroke opposed piston engine laid horizontally, a la jowett, subaru; not to mention vw and porsche. was it in "The Motor Ship" that i read that some of the worlds biggest and fastest container ships had horizontal, opposed piston, 2 stroke diesel engines? The Cegielski/Ishikawajima Harima 10HO34J-A77 10 cylinder supercharged opposed piston 2-stroke horizontal diesel engine comes to mind. with it's compact size and low height it was an ideal choice for ships that need a high speed but spend a few hours in port. i believe one of the reasons given was to reduce the engine room height, mainly to allow bigger and better accommodation for the 13-man crew who have little time for port-side recreation. reportedly each crew member has his/her own cabin-suite (with outside veranda and sun patio), comprising master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, guest bedroom with ensuite bathroom, walk in closets, breakfast nook with built in refrigerator and ice maker behind sliding panels of choice south american hard woods, private office with satellite telephone and high speed computer connection, and a butler's pantry (don't ask me why). senior staff have 8 person jaccuzis on their sun patios. between each cabin suite is a large, well equiped exercise room. this not only keeps the crew members in good shape but also reduces greatly inter-cabin-suite noise of loud music and cocktail party revelry. the extra space made possible by the aforementioned main horizontal propulsion machine, allows a 45 seat theater on the entertainment deck, complete with proscenium and dressing rooms; a number of the container ships have keen amatuer dramatic clubs (for obvious reasons the audiences are not large for their thespian productions) and it is said an operatic club was started on one vessel. this deck also has a full size badminton court and mini-golf course, as well as the usual table tennis and shove ha'penny tables.
it was noted that there is also space for a fine mahogany panelled banqueting suite (for shippers, etc.) complete with chippendale-like dining table and chairs to seat 24 guests. and last but not least is the fine book-lined lounge, replete with dark oak panelling and deep leather arm chairs to give the crew the ambiance of an elite gentlemans club.
so you can see, john - that the opposed piston 2-stroke horizontal diesel engine does have it's place in the modern marine world.
