On the subject of paddle steamers and the like - does anybody remember
the BNR wagon
ferry that plied between Garden Reach and Santragachi? It was called
the "Sir Trevedan
Wynn" after the founder of the BNR and was double ended. It loaded
wagons at S..G.. and came directly, more or less, across the Hooghly.
She had port and st'bd lights to show she was going ahead. Then she
made the journey back - with a new set of navigation lights that
showed she was going ahead! I understand that she was constructed in
America and on the voyage from the US to India got tangled up in the
Russo-Jap spat and was fired on by the Ruski navy! She carried about
20-30 CGBs each way. Anyone with a photographs??.......Billllll.......!
