On the subject of paddle steamers and the like - does anybody remember  
the BNR wagon
ferry that plied between Garden Reach and Santragachi? It was called  
the "Sir Trevedan
Wynn" after the founder of the BNR and was double ended. It loaded  
wagons at S..G.. and came directly, more or less, across the Hooghly.  
She had port and st'bd lights to show she was going ahead. Then she  
made the journey back - with a new set of navigation lights that  
showed she was going ahead! I understand that she was constructed in  
America and on the voyage from the US to India got tangled up in the  
Russo-Jap spat and was fired on by the Ruski navy! She carried about  
20-30 CGBs each way. Anyone with a photographs??.......Billllll.......!
