Mike,

People fall asleep on "watch" if there are too few of them on board. There are two possible solutions to this - increase crewing numbers (the first part of the above statement) ; don't have any crew at all (the second part). The latter might sound draconian, but it will sure as hell remove the problem of people falling asleep. If you ain't there, you can't fall asleep. I'll bet a draught document is already circulating among bean counters to that effect, with a picture of a ship on the front for them to colour in.

A friend in Canada sent me photos and details of the Emma Maersk, must be the ugliest ship afloat. L = 1302 ft, B = 207 ft, 31 kts, 15,000 containers. The "accommodation block" is midships with 10 or 11 decks and at least 93 windows - if the ship is 207ft beam, the bridge is 207 ft port to stbd. The engine is a B&W 2 stroke 108920 metric HP, 9 or 14 cyls depending on which photo one looks at. All very impressive, but she has only 13 of a crew. She'll make a fine sight sitting on a shingle beach on some tropic isle.

Hugh.
