[BITList] Question Time stirs fears Wootton Bassett will become apolitical battleground - Times Online

John,

The constant TV pictures of flag-draped coffins being ceremonially taken from planes and paraded through the packed streets of Wootton Bassett no longer incite feelings of pride, etc, in me, just despair at the loss of so many young men. As I sit eating my tea with the subject on TV, I now ask myself when it will end, and, an odd thought - how do I tell one parade from another? I recall seeing a old man doff his cap when the cortege of my father's funeral passed him - a simple gesture of respect that I have never forgotten. Getting rid of the pomp and panoply, all the flags and such, would not suit the politicians, but it sure as hell would make me feel better. As things stand the funerals are being used to stoke up popular support for the "war". A question occurs to me - have the families of these soldiers got any say at all on how their funerals are organised?

Hugh.
