There's as much chance of getting at the truth of any Westminster government involvement in Megrahi's release, as there is of getting at the truth of why he was convicted in the first place. We are now hearing from a string of tame cancer specialists who are able to do remote prognosis. Megrahi's health is much improved since they took a hand in his case from afar. He may live for another year, one claims, having looked up his book of statistics - the original diagnosis was flawed, says another, from a distance, having played eff all part in it.

We hear from the BBC - their coverage has been less than objective - that a poll conducted by them reveals 75% of Scots think the man should have stayed in jail. Over the past couple of weeks I've heard one elderly lady who thinks that. I know of nobody else who thinks the man did it, let alone that he should have stayed in jail. Over the past days the Herald letters page has been devoted wholly to the case, and of half a dozen letters from the USA, I saw only one openly condemnatory. Of the dozens from the UK, all a couple were supportive of the release. But 75% of Scottish people in the street don't read the Herald, preferring The Daily Express, The Sun, The Daily Record, etc, where what to believe is in very large type in the headlines - no need to look inside, prejudices confirmed.

Hugh.
