Poor Hugh, said Janet, referring to me as the one reading the e-mail.

I well remember the story telling phase of my life.  We were in Denmark, and the girls - Susan (3), Alison (1) - had separate rooms.  Susan required the same story every night, and it was one I made up.  She would correct me if I strayed or forgot, and even at 3 she was a bossy boots.  She would (eventually) go to sleep on my arm, then I had to work out how to extract my arm without waking her and having to tell the story over again - and I'd probably told it to her 3 or 4 times already.
