hugh

thank you for the back ground to the hawking fiasco, I didn't know it; the situation here is so bleak I don't get a newspaper or watch tv news.
however, one might suppose journalists are employed for their literary abilities and reporting prowess.
I have discovered this is far from the truth here - hence the complete rubbish from the IBD!
but contrary to your thought of "egg" and "face", any such mistake in print or telly is ignored - there is no such thing as shame or embarrassment in such gross errors - certainly no explanation or apology.
additionally, one must look behind the scenes to see who is the driving force of the particular newspaper, magazine or channel on telly. I don't think there is such a thing as un-biased reporting now - if there ever was. everyone has an agenda.
I mentioned before that people over 65 have medicare - which is a nhs run by the government. some Idiots over 65 have been shrieking at public meetings that they don't want the government messing in their medicare health plan - not even aware that it is operated solely by the government. this is the level of abysmal ignorance there is here. incidentally, no one complains too much about medicare.
these same morons who scream they don't want government bureaucrats telling them what to do, don't seem to be concerned that numerous government bodies already tell them what to do.
e.g. Federal Drug Agency warns, tests and controls drugs one buys at the pharmacy and/or are prescribed
Federal Aviation Authority - airline safety, etc
Federal Communications Commission - radio and tv broadcasting, etc.
Internal Revenue Service - collecting federal taxes, and they certianly tell us what to do - or else.
There are hundreds of federal agencies and commissions charged with handling such responsibilities as managing America's space program, protecting its forests, and gathering intelligence.
For a full listing of Federal Agencies, Departments, and Commissions, visit USA.gov.
these silly folk shriek that they have rights and the federal government can't push them around, quite unaware that some kind of over sight is necessary in society if we are not to descent into anarchy..........................
really, hugh.........I despair over this place.
as some one once said - everyone wants to be john wane!

Colin,

The involvement of Stephen Hawking in the brouhaha illustrates, if illustration was needed, just how far removed from this world some in the USA are. Hawking was in the US to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from The President. The Investors Business Daily newspaper printed an article stating that, if Hawking lived in the UK (they assumed he was American), he'd be left to die under the NHS. The article was "swiftly withdrawn" (how does one withdraw an newspaper article that's already in print?) when it was pointed out to these dummies that Hawking was born in the UK, lives and works there, and is grateful for being kept alive by the NHS for the past 40 years. The words "egg" and "face" come to mind.

Hugh.
