John,
A fascinating look at a lost culture. For some reason the 1906 pictures were
accompanied by When The Saints Go Marching In. I'm all for that. Though
George V's dominion seems to have excluded Scotland in 1911, by 1917 we were
back in the fold when he did a tour of the shipyards, marine engineering
works and major steel mills in the UK. I've just finished an article on his
local visit. He did Greenock and Port Glasgow in one day, 20 minutes per
shipyard and 20 minutes per civic function. Though there were 32 (!!)
vessels on the ways and being fitted out in Port Glasgow, he only had to
view a small number. He also looked at forgings and castings. His views on
it all were not recorded. He left Port Glasgow for Glasgow. There is a
photo of him striding the few steps from the Royal Rolls along a carpet into
the City Chambers at George Square. In the far far distance, beyond the
serried ranks of police and soldiers, quite out of the square, are tiny dots
that one assumes are members of the public. According to the caption, they
were "at a respectful distance". He was 20 minutes in the City Chambers.
Hugh.
