  Salaams,
for those of you that have left, whether assisted or by choice I sent this for inclusion to the BI ship 'Ayatollah for her consideration.

  RIP

I just can’t see any answer to the current strife affecting what’s left of the group; we must have witnessed the shortest lived proffered olive branch in history. Is constant sniping something to do with the onset of age and if so does anyone really know at what age it starts or are there clues that ones wife/partner of whatever persuasion can look out for and thus warn the afflicted to desist or else?

Some talk of gas carri ers reminded me of my one and only contact with this type of vessel. I joined Gambada having missed my proposed vessel, an OBO, due to fog at Heathrow and was appointed as gopher to/for the marine superintendent at Cammell Lairds in/at Birkenhead. The ship was nearing completion and as its sailing date approached we all had to attend a course run by the designers Kvaerner Moss, a Norwegian company. I should have realised at the outset that it was shear madness to sail on such tonnage, this was confirmed when I was railroaded to actually sail on it after trials as part of the yards guarantee gang of fitters/shipwrights and uncle Tom Cobley. One of the yards K/M men had pointed out the breathing apparatus fitted in every cabin stating that it was supposed to last ten minutes, that was if you were lying down, divide that by four or perhaps more if you were trying to launch a lifeboat, he ended by saying that really it was just enough time to bend over and kiss your ass goodbye! This, my opinion of tankers/gas carriers call them what you will is purely personal, try as I might I just couldn’t get on with them (ships not personnel) so I left.

As I may have stated previously I did the next sixteen years on cross channel ferries where believe it or not the money was far better and had fringe benefits that were0Anot to be sniffed at! The downside and it was a downside was ‘sleep’, damn near impossible with marauding kids stamping and screaming up and down the boat deck and in the observation lounge directly placed alongside/above the engineers/pursers accommodation. Other discomforts and annoyances including tannoy announcements which have increased since Zeebrugge, vibration and associated noise, lousy bloody weather aggravated by lack of sleep. As some of you know I recently attended a fortieth wedding anniversary in Inverness and travelled with P&bloody, Zeebrugge/Hull, the tannoy was utilised ad nauseum with information being offered on a vast range of topics (none of any interest to most) which included the gem that smoking in cabins was forbidden and that ‘they’ would know because the smoke detector would go off! It’s true! I came to the conclusion that the vashmerders and experts that we are assaulted with via the media have infiltrated nearly every walk of life and sadly there now seems to be no escape.

I believe this group was ostensively set up with BI AND ‘associated matters’ in mind and it’s sad to see that we are reverting back to nappyhood and furthermore when we write we have to take great care so as not to offend the afflicted of whatever persuasion or belief. What happened to good old common sense, (I ha ve read of it’s demise) I have my beliefs and no amount of argument will deflect them, but I don’t ram them down others throats? Its time that the group was allowed to govern and moderate itself, then and only then can it move on from the current quagmire it now finds itself firmly embedded in!

My last word on the subject, do I here a sigh of relief, sad to say most probably.

  BR FinF
