Bill, Tom,

Many thanks for the advice re Firefox, etc. I'll be applying it as soon as I can get the problem fixed that makes it necessary to apply it, if you know what I mean. Internet Explorer is downloading corrupted files, in particular AV update files, and I gather from an erudite article on-line that the problem is common - what it does is download part of the file and ignore the rest. At the next attempt it doesn't bother downloading anything, just takes the previous one from the cache, and naturally you get the same result, so I've set the system to clear the cache each time. The article recommends Firefox, but fails to say how one gets an uncorrupted download via Internet Explorer. I've tried. If Doxford had made computers they might have been big, but they'd've worked.

The machine was down again this morning for a while, but I know why, and that particular action is on the banned list. I got it going again by clearing the CMOS memory with everything unplugged from the motherboard.

Regards,

Hugh.
