John,

I caught a TV programme this afternoon that is relevant to the Bomber
Command Memorial campaign. The programme dealt with the successful raid by
150 British paratroopers on a German radar station in 1941 or 42 to recover
a radar set. The set was needed so boffins could see what it was about, and
hopefully work out a way to reduce the enormous losses sustained during
aircraft sorties across the North Sea and the Channel. Losses were high - 7
in 10 crews did not complete a spell of operations. They found German radar
lacked any defence against jamming. The raid cost 2 dead and 6 accidentally
left behind on the beach, with a bonus of 2 German prisoners.

Hugh.
