90 year old Eileen Saunders, wrote this poem as late as 1974.
No doubt witnessing the events of 1940 had a profound effect on her.
At the time, Eileen was building dummy/ decoy Hurricanes at a
furniture factory in Hailsham, East Sussex.
Combat over Britain
in the distance, coming nearer
You can hear the faintest hum,
Of the dreaded Nazi warplane
Aerial combat just begun
Nearer, nearer, low the noises
Of the cannons deafening roar,
Tell in no uncertain gauges
We are in the grip of war.
Up there, high, so high above us
See then wheeling, rolling round,
Knocking, banging, at each other
Some will end upon the ground
Fighting there with bright and shining
Britain's youth - plus iron will,
Hold their own, though they're outnumbered
Surging forward to the hill.
Watch the swirling vapours curling,
From their engines, through the cold.
What a pattern they are making
Showing they are very bold.
But at last the conflict ceases
Spitfire has routed Hun,
Hurricane has chased the Nazis
Hitler now is on the run.
And when many a hitter battle,
Has been fought, and blood been split
When the cream of Hitler's Luftwaffe
Really does show signs of wilt,
Then the day was not too far distant
When the bells did for us peal
We all sang the song of victory
And thanked God for nerves of steel.
March 1974. Written on thinking of Battle of Britain in 1940. (by
Eileen Saunders)
