Not all that long ago I read a fairly academic article dealing with the origins of Australian and New Zealand speech.  I pause to ask, why not New Zealandian?  I don't recall if it focused on the dialects, or on the accents, but it concluded the Aussie speech is predominantly English in origin, while in NZ it is Scottish. It could well have been by the same chap who wrote the one in The Australian - bits of the latter ring a bell.
