A fascinating tale, but Hornblower or Bolitho or Aubrey would have done the job in a flash then got on with the rest of the plot.  The incompetents were too busy seeking glory to notice what the famous three would surely have noticed after a glance at the charts with furrowed brow followed by the dispatch of a couple of boats with secret instructions.
