Fast lane to Europe Indian car exports start to motor

THE discharge of 2,450 Indian-built Hyundai i10 cars in Bremerhaven  
marks India’s rapid rise in the automotive sector, writes Ralph  
Witthohn. Höegh Autoliners loaded the export cars earlier this month  
in Chennai, where in February Hyundai inaugurated its second Indian  
factory. Built at a cost of $1bn, the plant will double the  
manufacturer’s annual capacity in India to 600,000 units. The 27,887  
gt Höegh Chennai, pictured, is formerly the Maersk Sea, renamed after  
Höegh Autoliners took over AP Møller’s car carrier fleet earlier this  
year. The vessel is still crewed by Maersk seafarers. Ralf Witthohn
